Resilient Housing for Widows in Hanang District Sponsored by the Loss and Damage Youth Coalition
In December 2023, a devastating landslide tore through the villages of Jorodom and Gendabi in Hanang District, Tanzania—leaving many families homeless overnight. Among the most severely affected were widows, already vulnerable and now displaced into unsafe temporary shelters with no clear path to recovery.
At EmpowerHer Tomorrow Initiative, we believe recovery is not just about shelter—it’s about dignity, security, and resilience.

Through our Resilient Housing Reconstruction Project, funded by the Loss and Damage Youth Coalition, we’re working to restore more than just homes. We’re building climate-resilient structures designed to withstand future disasters—equipped with solar power, sanitation, and clean water access.
The Crisis on the Ground
Many of the original homes in these remote villages were built with fragile materials, unable to endure the intense rainfall and soil movement that led to the landslide. Now, months later, families—especially widows—remain in temporary or borrowed spaces, often unsafe and lacking basic utilities.
Our Approach
We’ve completed the construction of two climate-resilient houses and toilets so far, and more are underway. Beyond physical infrastructure, we’re also conducting training sessions on disaster preparedness and sustainable living—ensuring that communities are not just rebuilt, but empowered.

Voices of Resilience
During our recent site visits, we heard firsthand how this crisis has upended lives. “I sleep with one eye open,” one widow shared. “When the rains come, I don’t know if the roof will hold.” These stories fuel our mission and remind us that true recovery includes both physical safety and emotional peace.
What’s Next
By April 2025, we aim to complete two more homes and sanitation units, bringing long-term safety to four vulnerable families. Every brick laid is a step toward climate justice.
We thank the Loss and Damage Youth Coalition for standing with us—and with the communities rebuilding from the ground up.
💚 Support our work. Share their story. Stand for resilience
