Rebuilding Hope: Climate-Resilient Homes Rise for Families Displaced by Landslides in Hanang District

Hanang District, Tanzania — 1st July 2025
Families who lost their homes in the tragic landslides that hit Hanang District are beginning to rebuild their lives, as new climate-resilient houses are now under construction — thanks to the support of the Loss and Damage Youth Coalition.

The houses are being built with durable materials, raised foundations, and roofing designed to withstand future climate shocks. With walls up and roofing frames in place, progress is visible and full of promise for families who have lived in temporary, unsafe shelters since the disaster.

“This project is not just about construction — it’s about restoring dignity, security, and hope to families who were hit hard by climate change,” said Veronica Bey, Executive Director of EmpowerHer Tomorrow Initiative. “We’re building safer futures, one home at a time.”

Each house includes safe sanitation facilities, solar-powered lighting, and clean water access, ensuring not only safety but a healthier living environment.

The initiative aims to address the growing reality of climate-induced displacement and the urgent need for locally-led adaptation and recovery efforts.

EmpowerHer Tomorrow Initiative expresses its gratitude to all supporters and calls on more partners to step forward and invest in community resilience and recovery
