Youth-Led Initiative Transforms Agriculture for Women in Tanzania with AI and Smart Tech
TANZANIA – In a significant move to bridge the digital divide in rural agriculture, the EmpowerHer Tomorrow Initiative has announced the launch of a new project designed to equip women smallholder farmers with climate-smart technology. Supported by the European Union Youth Empowerment Fund through the Global Youth Mobilization, this youth-led effort targets the critical intersection of gender equality, food security, and climate resilience across the region.
With nearly 70% of agricultural land in the targeted areas facing degradation due to climate change, food security has become a pressing issue for local families. EmpowerHer Tomorrow is stepping in to change the narrative by providing women farmers with tools that have historically been inaccessible to rural communities: regenerative farming techniques combined with modern technology.
Moving beyond traditional aid, this project introduces a high-tech approach to local farming. The initiative will distribute solar-powered IoT (Internet of Things) devices and introduce AI-driven tools for crop disease and pest detection. These innovations allow farmers to make data-driven decisions—monitoring soil health and weather patterns in real-time—to maximize yields while protecting the environment.
“Our mission goes beyond just farming; it is about building resilience against climate change,” said Prisila Kessy, Managing Director of EmpowerHer Tomorrow. “Women are the backbone of Tanzania’s agriculture, yet they often lack access to the modern resources needed to adapt. By combining traditional wisdom with cutting-edge technology, we aren’t just improving a single harvest; we are empowering these women to secure their economic future.”
Key Project Highlights:
- Technological Access: Deployment of smart farming tools and mobile apps to 100 women farmers.
- Land Rehabilitation: Restoration of 200 acres of degraded land using sustainable practices.
- Economic Impact: A projected 15% increase in crop yields and a 20% boost in household income.
The project is entirely youth-led, demonstrating the vital role young people play in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Zero Hunger, Gender Equality, and Climate Action.
